All Nordic countries will be represented in this event. Katu Kaiku The Finnish Jazz Federation will organise two traditional tours and two co-produced tours in the spring of 2016. Apply by an electronic form on May 3rd the latest. The Finnish Jazz Federation will complete the selection process in June. Joona Toivanen, solo piano Out of the over 60 applications, the Artistic Board of the Finnish Jazz Federation has selected four ensembles to tour the country in the fall season of 2017. That brings the total number of the federation’s annual tour productions to nine. For the fall tours in 2017, the Artistic Board selected Kalevi Louhivuori Quintet and Raoul Björkenheim Triad to perform on the federation’s own tours. The association also supports two tours produced by independent agencies: Flame Jazz Messengers by Flame Jazz, and Timo Lassy Band’s tour by Diamond T Ltd. In addition to the tour organisation and development and Jazz Finland website, next year’s agenda consists, among others, of the following projects: strategic planning of Jazz Finland 2020, launching of a national new jazz club network, production of the Young Nordic Jazz Comets showcase at Tampere Jazz Happening 2015, and preparations for the Jazz Federation’s 50th anniversary year. The Finnish Jazz Federation was started in 1966, so semicentennial celebrations are in order in two years’ time, in 2016. The group released their debut album Outer Space (SatnaMusic CD141) in November 2014. Free Voices, Free Sounds Tour 2015: Aleatoric + Impérial Quartet 9 – 17 March 2015 On tour: Pepa Päivinen & Good Romans (FIN) Organised annually since the year 2000, the Young Nordic Jazz Comets showcase event presents the best of Scandinavia’s young jazz talent. Such Finnish groups as Mopo, AR Quartet, Ilmiliekki Quartet, SUN Trio and Kvalda have been catapulted to big leagues from the YNJC competition previously. – The Jazzkalenteri (Jazz Calendar), run by Hanste since the millennium, is the only comprehensive web forum that lists the upcoming jazz concerts of the Helsinki metropolitan area. In addition to updating the calendar, Hanste keeps fellow fans posted about jazz gigs via a large mailing list and by his active presence in social media. The recipient of the Jazzmuusikot ry’s first “Vuoden jazzdiggari” acknowledgement in 2008, Hanste can be found where jazz is happening – the live scene; the most natural environment for jazz music throughout its history, says Markus Partanen suomenkieliset casino new orleans, veteran host of Finnish Broadcasting Company’s Jazzradio. Organised since 2000, the Young Nordic Jazz Comets is an annual showcase for promising Scandinavian jazz bands. Originally a competition that was held each year at a changing Scandinavian jazz club, YNJC has recently been shaped towards a showcase that offers young groups an opportunity to display their talent at international jazz festivals. Have you and your band been planning a tour for spring 2016? Will you have something special to offer that time, a new album, maybe? Have you already found a body to produce and finance your tour, take care of the practicalities, marketing and ticket sales? The Finnish Jazz Federation will help two groups or two producing bodies that actively pursue their goal, have a clear vision of what they want and a realisable plan with a budget to carry out their tour. The Jyväskylä native Jori Huhtala (b. 1984) graduated from his hometown’s local conservatory as a pop-jazz musician in 2004. He completed his MA degree at the jazz department of the Sibelius Academy in 2014. The academic year 2010-2011was spent studying at Stockholm’s Kungliga Musikhögskolan. Huhtala is involvd in the groups Kvalda, Big Blue, Raoul Björkenheim Ecstasy, Panu Savolainen Toivo and Jussi Fredriksson Jazz Wars. The touring periods are two weeks long: Album-launch Tour: Jorma Tapio & Kaski | Pauli Lyytinen Machinery 9 – 19 March 2016 Oddarrang, an unusual outfit in the field of Finnish popular music, will go on a tour co-produced by Annamaija Music Company and the Finnish Jazz Federation this December and in February next year. The group plays its leading figure Olavi Louhivuori’s compositions, hybridising jazz with post rock and art music, having received plenty of praise for their subtlety of expression and extended soundscapes that draw the listener in from head to toe. Oddarrang released their third album, In Cinema, in autumn 2013, and, fittingly, they have performed the music accompanied by four short silent films in recent years. In fact, it was for these films that Louhivuori originally created the music. In February 2015 the group will revisit the same concept by fitting the four short films with music live in Kuhmo and Tampere. In addition, the tour will take Louhivuori and his crew to Helsinki, Savonlinna, Jyväskylä and Turku, the last mentioned being the first stop, on 5 December. Alexi Tuomarila Trio is Alexi Tuomarila – piano, Olavi Louhivuori – drums, Mats Eilertsen – bass This year’s line-up featured Mopo – who performed twice during the day –, Eero Koivistoinen Quartet and The Northern Governors. The event was hosted by DJ Markka, who also entertained the audience with his DJ set during the intervals, and closed with a jam session à la trumpeter Jorma Kalevi Louhivuori and friends. JazzPiknik draw an audience of roughly 500 jazz enthusiasts, each of whom the Finnish Jazz Federation and mbar wish to give their warm thanks. The laid-back atmosphere and good energy that prevailed all day culminated during the show of the Northern Governors when the audience got up to stomp their feet to the headlining band’s funky tunes. Elektro GT play jazz, for sure, but their variant has been spiced up with a generous amount of electronic elements and compelling rhythms. With each member coming from a slightly different musical background, the heterogeneity of the band’s influences becomes even greater. Drummer Hassinen has made a long career in the fields of jazz kasino online betting, art music and electronic music, while Louhivuori is perhaps known first and foremost as a jazz artist. Rissanen’s musical roots, in turn, spring from a firmly classical soil, whereas Kämäräinen’s comfort zone lies somewhere in the middle of jazz and rock. Porra, then again, comes from heavy metal circles, having also plenty of experience in composing music for the TV and cinema. On tour, Porra is substituted by the soul-funk bassist Heikki Laine. As pigeonholing is of no use here, one might as well lay back and let Elektro GT’s “electro shock jazz” wash over. The group’s debut album came out on Texicalli Records in September 2014, which also saw them perform at Jazz Finland Festival and Tampere Jazz Happening. 8.00PM O. SAASTAMOISEN KVARTETTI Jazz Federation Tour: Alexi Tuomarila Trio 28 November – 11 December 2016 Jazz Finland would like to thank warmly all the musicians, guests, festival visitors, volunteers and the staff of each venue and the Crowne Plaza hotel. Very special thanks go to Annamaija Saarela for her work in the Europe Jazz Network and contribution to the Finnish jazz industry and to the ambassador of Finnish jazz culture, Emu Lehtinen of Digelius Music. Sid Hille Contemporary Collective on tour 4 – 17 May 2015 The Finnish Jazz Federation held its general annual meeting jointly with the National Jazz Convention and Tampere Jazz Happening at Holiday Inn on 1 November in Tampere. Jazz-Espa is a traditional two-week concert series of Finnish jazz that takes place in the Esplanadi Park in Helsinki. 10 to 12 bands are selected to perform at the festival. The jury is looking for acts that are suitable for outdoor performing, primarily Finnish and have not been selected to go on a Finnish Jazz Federation-produced tour or performed at Espa in the past two years. “Their sound was extremely pleasant to the ear live – the context of improvised music did particular justice to Nikula’s bass clarinet.” Led by the eponymous trombonist, Kasperi Sarikoski & Nuance is one of the most interesting newcomers of the Finnish jazz scene. Free voices and sounds 20-year anniversary tour: Finland’s representative at the Young Nordic Jazz Comets showcase is Katu Kaiku. The saxophone trio is led by Adele Sauros. The following points will be given particular weight in the selection process: professionalism and the high quality and originality of the material. The level of professionalism will be assessed also in relation to promotion materials; ticket sales correlate positively with an informative homepage, for instance. Also, the group’s past activity and their topicality at the time of the tour (with regard to new releases etc.) will be taken into consideration. Whether the group has been selected before and when will also be taken into account. The Finnish Jazz Federation might end up offering a co-tour for two groups. Further, it should be ensured already at the stage of submitting the application that each group member should be available during the whole tour period that they are applying for. The Finnish Jazz Federation produces two tours for professional Finnish jazz bands in the late fall of 2015. The tours consist of 5 to 8 concerts around Finland (depending on demand). If you currently lead more than one ensemble, pick the most established and the most topical one. Founded in 1966, the Finnish Jazz Federation celebrates its 50 years in enhancing the jazz culture in Finland. The anniversary celebrations begin with a concert of a jubilee orchestra, led by saxophonist Mikko Innanen. Innanen, like all the musicians and guest soloists in the band, have received the annual Yrjö prize from the Jazz Federation. The Yrjö prize is considered the highest accolade that a musician can receive for their artistic value and input to Finnish jazz. Later in the year the band tours Finnish jazz festivals with various soloists. The premiere in April Jazz displays the biggest array of guests on stage. Vuorinen holds a M.A. and in the past five years he has worked as a producer-publicist for the UMO Jazz Orchestra. Vuorinen will succeed Maati Rehor, who was appointed as the executive director for the chamber orchestra Avanti! in early August. Rehor worked for the Jazz Federation since 2008, and the Board, Office and the affiliated organizations wish Maati all the best in her new job! The audio-visual concert is realised together with video artist Petri Ruikka. Amorandom (2012) is a short film, directed by Tuula Leinonen and Antti Peränne. It was the last film for Peränne, one of the pioneering animators in Finland, who passed away the same year. Amorandom recounts the story of an encounter of two people, exploring such themes as destiny and the unpredictability of life. The eight-minute film will be screened before the concert, after which the jazz trio and the video artist deconstruct it and create another, alternative world, giving birth to a new story, governed by different laws. The trio takes some musical cues from Aki Rissanen’s 2013 album Aleatoric. In addition to the touring Yrjö exhibition and the Anniversary Orchestra starburst slot jungle, a comprehensive history will be published. Edited by researcher Janne Mäkelä and composed not only of historically significant text but image and audio as well, it will become available online in conjunction with the anniversary concert on 22 April. In compiling and presenting the material, the Finnish Jazz Federation currently collaborates with Music Archive JAPA and Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE’s Elävä arkisto. The Yrjö award ceremonies take place during the annual National Jazz Convention, organized in hometowns of the federation’s member organizations. The tangible Yrjö prize has throughout the years been a work of art or craft by a professional or an upcoming local artist of the town in question. For the anniversary, the Federation has collected ten pieces that represent the spirit of jazz and the art culture in Finland to an audiovisual exhibition. The exhibition is open at the April Jazz from April 20 to 24 and later in the year the exhibition also tours Southern Finland. The exhibition is curated by Nina Suni, MA. It is a great pleasure to award a bassist, especially such a veteran as Uffe, Jori Huhtala, a member of the jury and a fellow bassist, sums up. In case of an exceptionally large band, the minimum number of concerts might be reduced to 4 due to financial reasons. The Finnish Jazz Federation will produce the tour, pay fees and per diems to the artists and sound engineers, and pay all travel, accommodation and publicity- and marketing-related costs.
